In the EFL Championship, Tyrese Campbell was introduced from the substitute’s bench tasked with finding a winning goal. His Sheffield United side finished the game strongly but had to settle for a goalless draw against Birmingham City at Bramall Lane.

A late rally almost earned Preston North End a point at Bolton Wanderers but it proved to be too little too late. Callum Lang’s men lost 2-1 in the early Championship kick-off in Horwich.

Also in England’s second tier, despite taking a first half lead Zak Swanson’s Portsmouth lost 3-1 against Queens Park Rangers at a disappointed Fratton Park.

Tom Hamer’s Lincoln City conceded a last gasp goal to leave the Riverside Stadium empty handed, losing 2-1 against Middlesbrough.

Jack Evans and Harry Souttar both featured in the opening League One fixture of the season. Notts County earned themselves an encouraging 1-1 draw against Leicester City at Meadow Lane.

An added time equaliser denied MK Dons victory at Oxford United. Gethin Jones completed 90 minutes of action in the 2-2 draw.

Aaron Morley’s assist gave Wycombe Wanderers an early lead at Blackpool, although the hosts fought back to secure a 1-1 draw.

Oldham Athletic got their season off to winning start with a 2-0 win against Port Vale at Boundary Park, where Ryan Delaney marshalled his defence to a vital clean sheet.

Also in League Two, Jordan Davies scored on his competitive debut for Tranmere Rovers in a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury Town at Prenton Park.
